Why does my Sandhills Bank debit card now include a chip?
As chip technology will soon become the security standard in the U.S., many merchants already accept chip cards and we want you to have the latest technology. You'll enjoy greater security when making purchases at a chip-enabled terminal or ATMs since the chip provides better protection against counterfeit fraud. Chip technology is already used in over 130 countries around the world, including Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom, so you'll enjoy greater acceptance when traveling internationally.
What does EMV stand for?
It stands for Europay, MasterCard and Visa, the three companies that originated the technical standard. You will also hear them referred to as
smart cards
or
chip cards
. In addition to storing data on the magnetic stripes they also store the data on integrated circuits (the embedded microchip).
How do I use my new chip card?
If the retailer/ATM has a chip-enabled terminal, the card is simply inserted face up in the terminal. The chip will remain in the terminal while the transaction is being processed. To authorize the transaction, follow the prompts as you do today. You will be prompted to enter a PIN or provide a signature to verify the transaction.
Always remember as a cardholder the signature based (credit) transaction provides the most protection to you!
When traveling internationally you may not be asked for a PIN. Once the transaction is complete you will be prompted to remove the card. If the terminal is not chip-enabled, you will swipe just as you do today. For transactions made over the phone or online, nothing changes.
When can I expect to receive my Sandhills Bank EMV card?
Sandhills Bank will be sending new EMV cards during the
week
of February 20, 2017. Continue to use your standard card with the magnetic stripe until your new card arrives.
Do I still need to notify the bank when traveling?
Just as is our current process, customers should notify us when traveling.
